Project Summary

An interactive design project that seeds behaviors addressing ecological topics. Stickers with QR codes are placed on specific objects encouraging viewers to “look” at the interactive triggers.  

When the QR code is read information is presented framing the viewer’s circumstance that “seed” a specific behaviors. Stickers are delivered in seed packets with instructions on the back on how to plant in public places.

Seed Packets

LookSeed sticker have a dual purpose of informing and inspiring behavior that has a positive ecological effect. These Moth stickers promote participants to simply turn off lights thus preserving natural resources Available online to participants who have triggered previous seeds. These glow in the dark stickers are delivered in seed packet with planting instruction on the back.

  4. Invitation - Participation is self directed

MOTH PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

EASIEST TO START INDOORS
Plant in room with little or no natural light that contains electric light source with accessible switch.  Best when planted where it can be read easily by a smartphone camera.

SOW SEEDS
Firmly affix sticker near light switch or electric light source. Plant when all danger of being witnessed has past. Plant quickly for best maturity. Can be planted separately or in groups on ceiling.

DAYS TILL GERMINATION 
Times may vary - Images of light source with moths may be posted on Instagram with #lookseed

The Moth Seed

How do you get someone to turn lights off? What if you could see with your phone, in real time, the actual resource consumption of electric lights. The moth and its compulsions towards electric lights became the most obvious totem to plant for this task.

STARTS

EASIEST TO START INDOORS
Plant in room with little or no natural light that contains electric light source with accessible switch. Best when planted where it can be easily read by a mobile phone camera.

STEP 1

WHEN READ BY SMARTPHONE
A viewer is taken to the lookseed.com website. They are prompted to point phone at electric light and tap screen.

STEP 2

RESOURCE SPECTRUM REVEALED
The percentages of natural resources used by the electric light are apparently read by the phone camera and displayed.

TURN OFF LIGHTS
If surprised and delighted by the magic of the resource spectrum user will turn off light as prompted.

SOCIAL INVITATION
Viewers are invited to follow the moth on Instagram and participate by ordering a LookSeed packets.

SHARING THE HARVEST
When a participant plants a LookSeeds at an electric light source they are encouraged to take a picture and post it with the hashtag #lookseed to notify others of its location.

LookSeed QR codes are like tiny keys that unlock a shared experiences and inspire participation. These anonymously sown interactive experiments spread organically, seeding awareness and empowering small acts towards a greater good.
